I love Hummus. And guess what? It's healthy! Yes, it has got fats and carbs (the good kind), but it’s also packed with protein, fiber, magnesium, vitamin B6, potassium and a whole load of other goodies your body needs every single day.
Eating hummus is said to prevent overeating and therefore gaining excess weight. Chickpeas also keep the digestive system free from toxics and harmful bacteria, decreasing your chances of getting cancer. It's good for your bones, it improves your heart health and boosts your energy.
Hummus means chickpea in Arabic and it's the Mediterranean and Middle East where Hummus is originally grown. The chickpea was one of the first crops to grow and the history of hummus dates back to the 1200s - even Plato and Socrates wrote about hummus and its nutritional value.
I started eating it years ago because of some vegan friends of mine, but whether you’re a vegan or a meat eater, hummus should be part of your diet!
- 1 can of chickpeas, drained, but keep 2 tablespoons of liquid for mixing (or 1 cup of dried chickpeas, soaked overnight)
- 1 tablespoon tahini
- 1 clove of garlic
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 3-5 tablespoons of virgin olive oil
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika (optional)
Blend them all together and enjoy.
